Pregnant Platy

I have a blue platy that I am pretty sure is pregnant. I put her in my breeder box and she is doing fine. But, how long should I expect it to be before she gives birth?

Welcome to Fishlore

I don't have the answer, but I'm sure another member who does will be along shortly.

Glad you decided to join!

Your pic may be too big. Go to picresize.com, resize it, and try to upload it again. It should work then.

Hope this helps!

Hi there...

What a beautiful platy you have there! How long have you had her? When did you start to notice her getting big? They are usually pregnant for 27-29 days and she doesn't quite look big enough to pop yet. They can also give birth over the course of a few days and sadly, I've had one die in childbirth.

I have lots of platies and have had a bunch of births and currently have 23 platy fry in a grow-out tank! Do you have a separate tank to put the fry in once they are born?

Feel free to ask questions and I will do my best to advise...plus there are many other members that know a bunch about platies!

I do not have a separate tank but i have two hanging nets to put them in. She has been getting bigger for about the last month. She has a very large black spot on her belly as well. I have a pair that color and another male with an orangish red fin and tail. We had a batch of fry unexpectedly and have about 13 that we found and caught and raised in the breeding nets. They are doing very well now. We found another 7 fry about three weeks ago and they are surviving just in the tank. this is our first attempt to contain momma while she gives birth. The tank is part of our homeschool science efforts and so my 13 yr old is anxious to see her give birth...I told him not to get his hopes up it will probably happen at night anyway! Thanks for your help. I just have never had platy's before so this is the first time I have had live bearers to watch!

My best count is thirty surviving...there were a few that seemed to be underdeveloped. They are up ans swimming and eating this morning. They are tiny. And as I figured they were born at night when we weren't watching! hehe Momma seems to be doing well and gald to be back in the big tank.
