sick platy

I have a 30 gallon tank with 12 platys and 3 corys. There are two platys that look sick with these white bumps on each side of their mouths. All the other fish look and act fine. I did have one platy that also was skinny with the white bumps and each side of his mouth that did die. Does anyone know what or why this is happening?
Thanks,
Fishfarmer

Tank has been set up for atleast 5 to 6 months now.
Change or wash filter once a month. 20% water change every other week. Temp is a steady 78 degrees.
ammonia, - 0
nitrite,0
nitrate,0
pH, 7.6

im not sure what the white dots are...do they go anywhere but the mouth ? could they be an injury or fighting? unfortunately you arent cycled unless you have live plants.....whenever you change the filter, it looses its bacteria....although that doesnt look like an ammonia issue, you could have one eventually...

No, I'm cycled and yes that is all that I use is live plants and drift wood. I thought I was supposed to clean my filter pads once a month in the fish water?

Ok...sorry didnt see live plants listed I appologize....your op said "Change or wash filter once a month." and not seeing live plants, I thought you might be hitting mini cycles which could irritate the scales ....yes you do rinse them but dont change them ...I hope someone has some more info for your platy ! ive not seen it before so I cant help in that area...

If you do not mind medicating. You could add some aquarium salt then bump the temp up a little. A deg. or 2 a day then hold temp in mid 80's for a week or so. If it is a parasite the salt and warmer water should kill it prety quickly.

That being said I personaly never medicate, or use any chemicals at all. The only thing I would do is bump the temp up.
