I have a had a platy for about a month now and the 2nd day I had it, i noticed it was much bigger than when I got it from the store i'm pretty sure it's a female and i was assumeing shes pregnate, I have her in a breeding trap so she wont eat her fry (since i dont know when/ if shell have them) i keep thinking i see a dark gravid spot but im not always so sure

Some platy Q

1) could someone look at these pictures and tell me if my Platy is pregnat or not?

2) is it a sign that she'll give birth soon if the male is hanging around the outside of the breeding trap?

3) how many fry do they usually have?

your answers are appriciated !

The pictures are little but I'd say she's looking pregnant.

As for the male, he's probably wishing she was out. Generally she'll stop eating, want to hide and act a little unwell before she gives birth.

Numbers can vary from 2 to 50 or more. How many live is another story, and that depends on how you raise them. In my heavily planted tanks, I end up with around 4 per birth living if I raise them in the tank loose.

Good luck!
