| putting a platy with a small goldfish???????? I currently have 3 tanks 30g with many fish, 10g with a female platy & neons and a small goldfish tank with 1 small goldfish. I am going to be putting the goldfish tank away for a bit (am pregnant and don't want to have to cope with new baby and 3 tanks) and have put the fish from the 10g tank (except the female platy) into the 30g tank. I can't move the female platy as there is a male in the 30g and do not want babies or have them eaten which is cruel. I am going to move the goldfish to the 10g tank but need advice on what to do with the platy. Will she be ok with the goldfish (with a heater set to 22oC) or do i have to put her with the male platy and risk her being chased to death & have the babies eaten.
Please help |

| Hi emma jane If I haven't said it before, welcome to FishLore.
Congrats on the new baby to be.
Your goldie should be kept in about 20g's. I know it's small, but they have a huge bio-load and can grow quickly.
Platys and goldies have different temperature requirements. Platys are tropical and goldies are a cool water fish.
Although goldies can survive in warmer temps, they won't thrive. Last edited by Lucy; December 27th, 2008 at 12:15 PM.

| The tank that the goldfish is in doesn't have a heater and the natural temp is 21 and i have just read that platys can go down to 18oC. I was going to put the heater in the tank mainly to keep the temp constant for the platy. Also i do a partial water change every 10 days so i do not feel that the bio load will be a problem for a goldfish in a 10g, i also change my filters, crystals etc when i am suppose to. This seems to work well as i have had my danios, guppies and molly for 15 months now and they were all fully grown when i got them so i am doing something right. Changing out your filter media all together is killing out bacteria. You should rinse the filter media with old tank water. I have 10 fish tanks, 9 FW, and 1 SW and my waterchange cycle is 2 times a week plus vaccuming one time a week.
Goldfish and platies are not compatible, not only because water temperature requirements (platies are tropical fish and have to have a heater in the tank, lower water temps for them is detrimental to their health) and the goldfish will get constantly picked on by the platie because its a slower swimmer.
The goldfish does need a 20g tank to thrive. |

| What kind of goldfish is it and how big is it? My concern would be if it was one of the fancy goldfish, it would not be able to avoid getting picked on by the platy. If it was a common or a comet goldfish, I would be concerned that it would not have enough room to swim as they are very active swimmers. |

| I would put the female in with the male, he wont chase her to death aslong as she can hide some places and also, platys take around 3 weeks to give birth from being pregnated, and the babies being eaten happens every day as a part of nature.

| The Platy and goldfish would be OK together, but platies much prefer being in a group of 3 or more, and goldfish need a bigger tank. Goldfish prefer an open tank suited for swimming, platies love a ton of plants and cover to hide in. Personally I'd put the goldfish in the 10 gallon temporarily, with plans to do water changes twice a week, and put the platy in the tropical community tank. Yes, she'll probably have babies, they'll either hide or get eaten, but it's natural. Most likely you won't even see them. Or, a fish store might take her back if you just don't feel like you can deal with it. |

| Thanks for all your replies, i will put the female in the larger tank with the male. There are so many fake plants in there and lots of fake logs etc so plenty of hiding places, plus she is twice the size of the male.
thanks again |
