Baby Platy!

I'm so excited! I found a baby platy in my fish tank!

I've had a pregnant female for several months and could never find any fry, but today I looked over and there was one swimming around by my floating plant!!!

I have the one fry in a breeding net, and am looking for more, but I have a few questions.

I want to keep the water very clean. How many water changes are recommended?

Also, I know fry can eat egg yolk, but is the kind from the carton ok?

the fry will consume it's own yolk sac which will be attached to the fish - I've never heard of them eating egg yolk other than that (but I may be wrong)

You can feed them crumbled fish flakes though.

As for water changes - just keep your readings as normal as you can.
Too many water changes might cause un necassary stress.

0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and as low as possible for Nitrates under 10ppm is ideal but if they creep up then water changes will help

Good luck in keeping him alive.

Agreed!!
You probably meant boiled egg york, squeeze thru stocking or fine net. Would'nt recommend for one or two frys unless have a bunch in separate rearing tank. Need daily partial water changes w/ aged water when fed boiled egg york (fouls up water too fast). Look at the bottom of flake container where you will find the powdered flakes which frys will gobble up readily. Monitor fry tank's water carefully and do small partial water changes as needed.

well I learned something today!

I never knew you could feed egg yolk

(although it seems like a lot of hassle for something that ultimately will give little benefit and I'd immagine would just mess up the water.

Saying that, sometimes I am curious as to what fish will eat - You would all be shocked if you knew some of the things my fish have been treated to!

For my fry, I put some flakes into the palm of my hand and add a few drops of aquarium water. I rub it with my finger until it is totally ground up and then drip it into the tank where the fry are (my tank, they are in the floating plants). They come to it quite happily. I stopped using the commercial fry food because it change colour and started to smell bad.

I've been feeding a diet of Nutrafin livebearer food (fine flakes and tubifex worms), bloodworms, and once a week peas, and frozen brine shrimp. Right now I have 5,1/2 inch fry, 6 1 inch juveniles, and several itty bitty fry. I feed twice a day except on the pea day and brine shrimp day. They seem to do great.

if you have a tank of specific fry and not access to live food, it is a great source of protein and I find it very helpful
