Plattys dieing :(

I have lost 6 of the 8 plattys I got two months ago. I have very hard water with a high pH 8+, which I think is causing the problem. None of the rasboras in the tank or the platty fry which are a few weeks old have died, just the adult plattys. My LFS owners says the hardness is not a problem, but I have my doubts, I also lost all 8 mollies I bough last winter in a matter of a couple months also. I have tried ampicilllin from the store, which now the owner says doesnt work He wants to sell me a sulfa based drug, but I don't believe infection to be the problem due to not loosing anything but the adult plattys. Any help would be appreciated, it is very depressing to lose my fish.

Hi lajefz welcome to Fish Lore

I'm really sorry that you're losing fish, I know how ditressing that can be.

When things go wrong it's best to test your water first.
What are the readings are for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates?
Are they showing any symptoms of illness?

Sorry for all the question, the answers will help the members help you.

Good luck.

Ammonia and nitrites are 0, I always keep an eye on that. No signs of illness, no spots, cloudy eyes, etc. I do notice them loosing a bit of their color vibrancy, but that is about the time they die.
