| Pregnant Platy A few months ago, i purchased a 20 gallon tank for my kids to enjoy, plus me. I got two glofish and 2 dalmation mollies. One of the mollies was pregnant when I purchased her, and i ended up getting a breeder net. Well she gave birth to the fry, and I then took her from the net. The male molly passed about 5 days after the fry came. Then within 3 days the female mollie died. After about a week all the fry, who seemed fine had died. I took a water sample to my pet store and my nitrates were extrmely elevated. Luckily, my glofish made it. I was told that when the fry(20 of them) were born it was just too many fish for my 20 gallon tank.
I didn't add any fish and waited about a week after I got the water right, and added 2 platys and a pleco. My tank had alot of algae, and as soon as i put the platys and pleco in the platys went to work and my tank is now spotless. I was told both platys were male, b/c I didn't want to loose any more fish. Well I think they were wrong and now my platy has a swollen belly. I checked on line about determinging sex in platys and sure enough the preggo looking one is female.
Here's my question...I have a small 2.5 gallon tank, and want to know if i should allow her to give birth in my main tank or move her to the small tank until she has the fry? |
