Is this platy pregnant or ballooned?

She's been this way for about a month now.

Welcome to Fishlore.

She looks pregnant to me. Are there any males in the tank? Was she kept with males at the pet store?

There was a male with her but he died about 3 weeks ago and yes the males and females were in the same tank at the pet store. I was worried after I read some info about ballooned platys.

Since she's been in a tank with males, it's about 99% certain that she's just pregnant and will stay that way for a while. We brought home 4 female platys and still ended up with fry about 5 weeks afterwards.

Thanks. Hopefully it won't be much longer for her. It looks painful to be stretched that much (remembering my pregnant days).

If you want to keep the fry, I'd recommend adding lots of hiding spots for them.. including floating plants or guppy grass (real or fake), caves and a layer of flat glass marbles on top of your substrate. It will give the fry a better chance of making it to safety. She'll start to look squarish around the back end when she's closer to dropping and will look for a quiet area of the tank to drop the fry. I put a semi-circle of plants around a corner of the tank to let our female drop her fry.

You can either let them grow in the tank & risk the other fish eating them or take everything out of the tank, including the other fish to find and catch the fry to go into a tank of their own.
