I have a blue and a... I dunno what she is ... lol Both have dark gravid spots. The blue's is pretty near solid black, and has gotten that way over time. She squared off, but I think she looks thinner. So i moved her to the 10g...
Which is where the other platy, and the three danios are now. I feel bad, thinking she may have the fry (or have had them) and they'll get eaten. Is it really mean to do that? The bottom of the tank is bare, I don't have much I can put in there. There's a glass jar, and and old well-cleaned prescription pill bottle.
I figure if she pops and I see any fry, I'll catch them and her and put them in the breeding net- it's what I had to do with the mollies.
If do not have an empty, seperate tank for her put her in the breeding net when she looks like she is about to pop. If not, most will be eaten before you can get to them.
That's the weird part. I had her in the growout tank for the molly babies I had, and I swear she looks thinner then she did. I never saw any fry, though I had plants and such in there for them to hide in (plastic breeding grass... ick. I wish I had Java moss).
I'll keep an eye on her If I do save any of the fry, the betta in the growout tank is going to have to move LOL
If you are wanting to save the fry you will need ALOT of hiding spots for the fry. if you are on a tight budget you can make a "Fry Mop" here is a link on how to make one http://shene.killi.net/Articles/breedingmopspawners.htm Fry Mops work for platys too. You can make it smaller if you want. Some fry like to hang out at the bottom of the tank some like the top.
With our livebearers, we'd put some flat glass marbles on the bottom.. caves, plants, floating plants.. anything that the little ones could hide in.
Yea. I was thinking of doing that- but at the moment, I have no way to get anywhere, and can't get anything. Nerve wracking- and I know no place in this little bitty town has anything like them LOL We're lucky we even have a grocery store!
I have guppies regularly dropping in the tank..both ends of the tank have a lot of plastic plants in them but there is a lot of open space in the tank. I have neons and guppies in the tank as well as 2 amano shrimp..I did have 6 cories in there also but moved them over into my 36 gallon tank. When a fish is dropping fry I leave her alone...she will hide in the plants and altho the other fish seem to know what is going on and hunt thru the plants for fry ...most of the babies make it and within a few hrs are fast enough so that no one bothers them...I have very tiny new born fry swimming with 1 1/2 in adults. I find this the best way..I may lose a few fry but the mother is never stressed by moving her and keeping her in a small area where she feels exposed to the rest.....good luck.
