Pregnant platy or sick platy

I bought a fat platy last week. I thought she was pregnant and about to drop fry. She looked like she was about to explode. Since she's a white twin bar, I could see little black spots near her anal fin. I've had pregnant platys before so I was thinking to myself, hey free fry.

So when I got home, I put her in the breeder box right away. No fry the next day but I did find a small clutch of eggs at the bottom of the breeder and she looked a bit thinner. I figured I was not doing her a favor so I let her out of the breeder and hanging around the rest of the fish for a while. I have some moss/grass/algae in the tank so I figured she's be ok if she did drop the fry unsupervised.

It's been a week and she's still fat and pregnant looking. No fry though. Now, I'm beginning to wonder whether she's a sick platy, rather than a pregnant platy. Are there known livebearer diseases out there that would cause a platy to look permanently pregnant? Or is it possible that the 1st pregnancy just has a longer gestation period?

PS: sorry about the blurry photos.

I would say prego!

I think that I read somewhere that livebearers can hold their broods ontill they feel safe enough to drop. Since she was just introduced to the tank, maybe she wants to be sure its good.

The twin bar platy finally dropped fry. Not that I've seen any fry but she's skinny as a female platy can be. I need to take out all the adults in that tank to see if I can find some fry. Very exciting!

PS: Just tore the whole tank apart and didn't find a single fry. Probably eaten by the adults (2 bosemani rainbow, 1 yoyo loach, 3 platy)

Yea, the fry need lots of hiding spots to avoid becoming snacks.. she'll drop more fry around every 25-28 days possibly.. definitely will if that was her first batch.

The eggs that she dropped were prematures, she most likely got stressed and released them. If she seems thinner and no fry have been found they most likely either got eaten by the others, or she aborted her pregnancy due to stress. I honestly think it was aborted. Though you have other fish who would love to eat them, chances are 10-20 would survive (depending on size of brood) because they are very crafty hiders and quick for their size. They fit where others can't.
