Having platies with only one tank

Hi all,
I'm new to the forums, this is the best forum for fish/etc. that I've come across!

Also a new fish owner. I have a 10 gal tank with 3 platies in it. From what I understand, babies are inevitable. On the other hand, space is an issue for me. Can I have platies in one tank (I need to add some low light plants)? Or is that borderline cruel, since all the fry will probably not be able to escape in the plant life.

I'm just trying to get a sense of what people evenually do that own platies, cause on the one hand, it's great to make babies, on the other, I can't really get another tank.

I guess in a nut shell, I'm wondering, avoid fish that breed a lot if only going to have one 10 gal tank? Or keep the platies and do....?

I can give to local fish store, if the fry will survive being in the tank. All I know right now is put screen over filter intake and add plants.

Thanks for your insight!

welcome to fishlore!!!!! and you will only have babies if you got different sexes, or if one was pregnant when you got them...so hopefully, neither will happen because a 10 gallon is ok for the 3 platys but no more....yes with a 10 gallon I would try to avoid having babies...not alot of local fish stores take babies back and most of the time we are left with trying to figure how to home them...goodluck!

Welcome to Fishlore.

Platys like to have 3 or more. They'll be fine together. If you have males and females, you'll have fry for sure.

Helloooooo and welcome to Fishlore

Its nice to see a beginner with a perfectly stocked tank, kudos to you

Platy fry is basically inevitable if you have any females at all if you cant tell which you have see the pics below. Most lfs dont take platy fry because if they did they would be overloaded. You could try to sell them, but really it isnt that easy because platies are easy to comeby.

I just usually leave the fry in the tank with dense foliage and some live and some don't I dont see it as cruel because it is natural. I dont know how others view it though.
