Hi, I am planning to get 3 platties, but don't watnt them to have babies. Will the same sex platties be happy? If so, what would be bettre males or females?
Thanks.

yes be very careful! when the girls are swimmin and dartin their anal fin folds up so for a moment the girlie will look like a boy.. oh if the store sells them from the same tank be very careful because theres a chance that the girl/girls can already be preggers.

i thought one of mine was for awhile but she was just fat.. lol!

3 males would be best since you don't want fry. The males tend to be smaller and if you have at least 3, they'll get along pretty good.

Thanks all, can I ask another question here as well - they dont have to be all the same type, can they be assorted platies?

Yea, they can be all the same type or different types. They just may school together better if they're the same type is all. But with just 3, they don't show a lot of schooling behavior typically.

It was a bad idea, at least didn't work for me - got 3 male platies. One died after first getting white spot and then droopsy. Other two were first quite fine, but as the time went by they started getting more agressive to each other. 2 weeks ago I got another male platy again, which was fine for a week, but now it is hiding most of the time from these 2 bullies. And these two - boy, they fight! All the time, constantly, swimming like torpedoes, biting each other (or pushing with their mouths). These two have their finns out all the time, dancing their "scarry" body dance. The new platty has clamped fins and most of the time spends in the log or plants. I does come out to eat - first of all fishes, so there is some hope. I am thinking it is getting droopsy, as it its stomach looks a bit fat, but then, ever since it got into our aquarium, it has been constanty eating algae (all the platties seems to fiest on it first couple of weeks), so it might be just overeating. It is not constipated, as it poos, the poo varies - from normal dark, to whitish stringy, which I read not a good sign - coud be internal parasites? I don't have another tank to separate one of the bullies or hospital tank for the new platy.
What would be the best thing to do to help it through? PS: water parameters good (ammonium 0, nitrites 0, nitrates between 0-10) Thanks.
