Platy Preggers!

He guys ( and girls ). I have a couple of platies, and recently I noticed that she looked much fatter then the male. So I moved her to the breeder net, and am awaiting to see if there will be any fry. Is there any precautions I should take?

The only thing I have to say is do not keep the platy in there for long because they can get really stressed and either die, or produce dead fry. Also you should have some breeder grass in your tank so the fry once released have a sence of security and can hide in the grass.

You may want to consider a 2nd female since you just have 1 of each gender now. The males can really bother the females.

I removed her from the breeder night last night, because she didn't look very pregnant to me after I read up on it. Also, I think I'll get 2 more females, as a good ratio for these type of fish is 1-3 ( 1 male to 3 females) . And I have lots of plants in my tank, so the little babies should be fine. Another question, would my Rainbow Shark try and eat them? If he wont, great, but I do have another tank I can put him in in case he does get aggressive.

Your shark could eat or attack the smaller fish as he gets bigger, especially once he sets up his territory. They're somewhat territorial and platys just don't seem to get the idea of staying out of another fish's territory.

Um, I think I've got one too! What do I do? I don't have a second tank set up yet and when I do my poor abused betta is going into it!

Could you find a home for him? With a friend that has a big tank or a LFS?

By "I've got one too" I meant to say a pregnant platy. There's no fry yet. I don't know how close she is or where to move her to.

If you want the fry, you'll need a tank for them to grow in. Most or all will get eaten in that tank. The best that could be done for them in the current tank would be to give them all the hiding spots possible and maybe divide the tank to seperate the platys - at least less adult fish would be looking for them to snack on.

Maybe I will try dividing the tank or getting one of those "incubators" I saw a picture of ... I don't know what's best. Do MOST people let the fry get eaten? I feel kinda bad about it.

Is she or isn't she?
