lost Platies

I bought 3 platies 2f and 1m and lost the male within2 days. The LFS gave me another and the next day, he died along with one of the females. My cardinals are fine, they have been in the tank now for 3 weeks along with my BN Pleco.
I have been getting conflicting readings between Interpet test kit and API master test kit. The latter has been showing the same readings now for 10 days, those being:
Ammonia-.25, Nitrite-0 and Nitrate-10 (todays was 5). Can't get a 0 reading ammonia, is this reading dangerous?
I thought Cardinals were the sensitive ones, why are my Platies dying?
Incidently the surviving platy has been giving birth already.

good morning slider..
I read your aquarium info, and see the tank has been running for six weeks. I think the reason you are getting ammonia readings is due to the tank not cycled yet. Your platies for some reason are sensitive to the ammonia and probably what is killing them off.
Yes, the cardinal tetras are very sensitive and should not be brought into a immature tank, but so far so good... and that is great.
Since you have the fish in the tank while it is cycling I would keep up your water changes to keep the ammonia down...
good luck with your tank!

Hi!

The Cardinals are used to the Ammonia - though it is not good for them. The platys are dying because they haven't accustomed to the poison and are dying because of it! .25 is a dangerous reading.

That sounds like an uncycled tank and if you can find a tap water conditioner that locks ammonia, like "Prime" or "Amquel+" it would help them with the ammonia. Partial water changes every other day would be recommended too.
