Hello!
I am wondering about platy genetics. It's kind of a long story...
Okay, I started out with a...
orange mickey mouse
red wag
pink dalmation
and something like a mismarked tuxedo (he was black with an orange belly and face.)
The pink dalmation was preggers when I got her, and she had 4 little dalmations.
Those little fellas bred with the others, of course, as did their ma, and now I have quite a collection! I now have...
red wags
reg wags with black speckles or blotches
pink dalmations with red tails
pink dalmation with a black tail
another mismarked tuxedo, but with blue irridescence on the black (sp?)
light orange dalmations with black tails
light orange dalmations
a light orange one with a gray cape and black splotches on the gray
I like them all. They are very pretty! I have 2 babies right now, and one seems to be a light orange wag, but he may turn out to have spots. Too small to see, quite yet. The other was black, but has been growing lighter, so I'm not sure.
Some of these guys have slightly elonganated dorsal fins. Nothing like the topsail platies, but longer than the normal ones.
My questions are these:
The ones with the big dorsals... could their offspring eventually have something like a top sail fin?
Whats up with the one with the gray cape? What do you think he'll sire?
The tuxedo with the blue, could any of her babies turn out more blue than she is? I really like the blue platies I saw in pictures, but when I was buying them I couldnt find any in the area.
Becuase they are inbred, will problems start showing up soon? So far, the fully grown youngest ones seem a little smaller than their parents, but arent deformed at all. Will I have to get rid of a bunch or these ones and get new blood in to avoid serious defects? Im not interested in breeding for a breed, I like the mixed ones.
Thank you!
