pregnant mickey mouse platy?

Hi everyone,
i bought a mickey mouse platy a week ago. It had a very gravid black spot just above the bottom of its belly. the guy at the shop said that he didn't know if its pregnant or not so i bought it anyway and one that i thought was male. The spot is still there and is very dark. When i bought the fish it was thin. It seems to be getting fatter but i can't tell if it is pregnant. Can anyone help me?

I would attach pictures but i cant find the wire for my camera.

Thanx

Check out the thread under freshwater species, livebeares, sexing livebearers. There are pictures which will help you identify if you have a female and male. I would expect it is a pregnant female, and that you should make sure your tank has plenty of plants to give the fry something to hide in. Good Luck

She's probably pregnant. They usually are, if they were kept with males.

she shows a gravid spot so she is definately prego.
The gravid spot is that dark mark toward the rear of her belly near the tail.

As CBC mentioned, if she has been in a tank with a male, she is pregnant.

True. A female livebearer that's been around a male or males will be pregnant. They're amazingly reproductive. I think it would take some sort of genetic infertility condition to stop a female from being pregnant and I'm not sure if that happens with livebearers.

Eh, I don't know about that, unless I have a ton of infertile fish. My swords in my ten gallon have had fry once. That was about two months ago. I still have three males and five females and none of the females are pregnant.

Chance are, they are producing fry and they are being eatten.

That's just my opinion of having kept livebearers for the past 28 years.

Yea, with that many swords in an overstocked tank, the fry wouldn't stand much of a chance.. 8 hungry mouths chomping away..
