MORE fry and some advice needed

Well I have MORE fry. When should I start feed BBS? How long will it take for them to get color?

The 1st batch did not survive.
I have a 10 gallon that is setup.

I am going to keep the ones that i am catching now in the 10 gallon with no filter running, just the heater.
Then when they have not chance of getting in the filter I will turn it on. Then I will use the fish the cycle the tank and keep it cycled so then when need be we can use it as it was intended to be used. A QT/HT for new and sick fish.

Fry need really clean water conditions. You have to run a filter, but you will need to cover the intake with something. On my fry tank I have cut a hole in a sponge filter and slipped it over the intake. This lets the water through but not the fry. It also provides more biological filtration. I take it off once a day and swish to clean crud out......

You will see color within a week. You can start feeding BBS now. Just a little at a time. I use both those and finely crushed flakes. I feed 4 times a day to start, and do a 25% water change each day. You have to do this because the fry really don't eat much of the food, and the water fouls quickly.

Good luck

They'll start eating right away or within a day or 2 most of the time. The color can come in after a month or 2 but varies. If you're not using Prime to treat the water, that (and Vita-Chem) would be a best bet for a fry tank. We also covered the filter intake of a regular HOB filter with fish net netting so the tank could get normal filtration but keep the fry out.

Congrats

If you're using gravel as a substrate in the 10 gallon fry tank, you should cover it with marbles because the fry might get trapped and crushed in the gravel(!). Well that also means that food will easily slip in the marble! So do regular vacuuming of the gravel(careful not to suck in any fry!)

A good filter for the fry tank is a sponge filter or a box filter. They are usually inexpensive. These filters are very good at rearing fry, preventing them to get sucked into the filter.

Oh and be sure your fry tank has cycled! Just get old filter media from your main tank and put it in the filter of the fry tank. That way, your fry tank will be cycled in less than a day or two.

Good luck!

All is going well.

MAN,do they grow FAST. They have to grow about a cm or two in a day.

I feed them BBS. I tried crushed flakes but they have not found them yet. My tank is fine. I do not have the filter yet BUT I will turn it on when they are bigger. They do not have that big of a bioload and I try not to feed them to much as to keep the water ok till i can get the filter up and running.

I would recommend safe filtration. Platys are poopers from the start and filtration combined with frequent cleaning and water changes will help more survive to be healthy adults.

Update

My fry are 2 week old TODAY.

All 6 of them are female. I am 95% sure of this.

I will try to get some pictures of them some time today.

I am feeding them BBS and 1st bits by that company that starts with a H.

Congrats and they'll be ready to move on to crushed tiny flakes from the Hikari first bites soon.
