Thinking of Putting Platies in 10 gal. Tank
Should i just have platies of different colorations to add variety, or add a few different fish of similar size?

I have platy's, mollies, neon tetra's, and black top tetra's and two red tetra's all cohabiting together and they get along great. If you have a ten gallon tank, you can get different varieties and you can layer them. By that I mean get some that like to hang out on the bottom and around plants (my neon's do that) and then my red tetra's they like to hang out in the middle, and the platy's and mollies are all over the place but closer to the top. Does this help?

I just have problems with anyone suggesting you having 5 different kinds of fish, three of which need to be in a school, all in a 10 gallon tank!!
Please remember the 1" of adult fish per gallon of tank rule.....
If you have platties, that would mean 3, and the fry they will have will soon have to go into a different tank.... Platties are lovely fish, and I have them. If you don't set out to try to save the fry, the adults will eat most of them so it might not be a problem with overcrowding, but you couldn't add a lot of other types of fish to that small of a tank.
As for whether you should have different colors for variety. If you have just one color, and let them breed, your LFS May buy or trade you for the fry. This wouldn't be so easy to do if you mix the colors.

I'd recommend just getting males. Different colored platys works out fine, we did that with our 2nd tank a year ago.

5 max, but then you would have to get rid of any fry, and if you don't get just males....you WILL have fry.

Remember also, if you would like to breed them you should have at least 2 females per male, to keep one female from being constantly harrassed. In a 10gal I'd recommend just one male and several females, or else all males/all females.

I'd allow 2.5" per female. I know the spec sheets list 2", but every female that we bought got to 2.5" or bigger easily.

If i get platies, i don't want them to breed b/c i don't have the space or resources to take care of the fry til i can sell them. so i guess i would have to go with either all males or all females. is there any difference b/t the coloration of males and females?

Not that I've ever noticed -- the only difference between the males and the females is the anal fin (which the females have) and the gonopodium (modified anal fin the males have).

With a small tank, 10 gal or so, I would really recommend also that you stick to one type of fish plus a bottom feeder of some kind. My 10 gal platy tank is vastly overstocked so I am currently prepping a new 20 gal tank. My LFS is happy to take the young'uns off my hands. I have lots of plants so a few babies survive but not the original 20+. My other 20 gal tank has just tetras in it, neons/cardinals, glow-eyes, plus 2 dojos and 3 cory cats. I know it is over-stocked as well but I'm a fiddling type of person and keep up with water changes and testing. I've had only 2 mass deaths of neon tetras, one was a disease that came in with a new couple of fish. I lost the new ones plus most of my old ones. The LFS lost all of theirs and their supplier lost his. The second mass death of neons I attributed to shock when I was overly aggressive cleaning the tank. The only other incident was a clamped-fin episode in the platy tank after I introduced a new one without quarantine. Two platies died, both juveniles. I think you can go over the 1" rule of thumb as long as you are prepared to keep ahead on the tank maintenance.
I adore my two single species tanks. My platies, of different types, are so cheerful and colourful. The youngsters are mutts but very cute mutts. The neons shoal and glitter as they move. Both tanks are very peaceful. The platys did not do well with the neons, they were just a bit too active.
I've also learned my lesson about quarantining. It was a very, very important lesson.

Ok, if you go with all females, they could have babies when you get them in your tank because they keep males with females, so I would recomend all males, if you are sticking to the same speices(sp)

All males, they are usually more attractive and they can't reproduce.
