Help!!!!

I got another pregnant platy from the lfs on sunday, she had 16 live fry. But now she is almost dead!!! I don't know what to do!! When I lost my mama platy before, I figured it was my fault, but twice I don't know what to do. She will let me catch her. I put her in my other tank that I know the Nitrite level is ok. Why do my mama's keep dying?? She is just laying at the bottom of the tank...........

The stress of being moved on top of having fry is enough to do some weaker fish in.

Sorry to hear you are having problems.

well im not quite sure what the problem would be
how large is she and do you know how old she is
sometimes older fish become very sluggish before they die because of old age
you can usually tell by her size, or her scales which might be a little strange looking not the sleek look of a young platy
this usually means they are getting old
as for the thing about stress
i dont know if that would affect her as much as the fry
are u losing many fry?
then that might mean that she is stressed out

She is fairly small, doesn't look old. I have platies that are older. I haven't lost any fry since they were separated. I just checked on her again and she had moved a bit, but that could have been caused my another fish or a snail. She will *gasp* (for lack of a better term) once in a while, and shutter. Her death is emminent, I just don't want to watch her suffer....

this is extremely strange in my opinion
i dont think u could have done anything wrong
the only thing that i can think of is that u possibly pinched her when either catching or releasing her
wat did u have her in when she was having her fry?

I didn't expect her to have them so soon after I got her. I just had her in a big plastic container. Maybe I had her in there too long and she got cold? I dunno, I guess I shouldn't be upset, I only had her 2 days and she did give me 16 babies to raise....

it's unfortunate, but not uncommon for pregnant livebearers to die from giving birth. i'm sorry that you lost her.

have both platys been in the same tank? what size is the tank? does it have an airstone? what kind of filter & heater does it have? what are the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings on that tank? what other fish are in that tank? what is the temp. of the water in that tank?

the strange thing is that i have had over 50 instances of birthing livebearers, but i have yet to have any complications yet

Just means you're lucky. Even when taking every precaution things happen. Kinda like humans have complications even if they do everything right, same with fish.

most times, our fish dont get very ripe though
they have quite small broods between three and five fry
getting over ten is usually strange for us
alot of times, they have them in the tank before we can tell that they are even ripe
