Just got new Platys!

I just got a trio of Platys for my new tank (the 20long that I've had since April but haven't set up till now). They're a pretty cool looking strain, yellow with black caudal peduncles and black speckling on the body (like tuxedos but with less black on the body), and there were also a few yellow wags in with them (though the wags had some black speckling on the body). Not sure what you call the yellow/black strain. The store just called them "moons". They're really healthy looking, unlike the sickly livebearers you see at most chain stores. I never cease to be impressed by my lfs. The guy there caught specific platys out of a large group within about 30 seconds each, and I only had to say "I want the wag, the large female, and the yellow male." !!!!! Say that to someone at any other store and they'll look at you like you're a martian, or if they do figure out which fish you want they'll take an hour to catch them all. :P One female (the speckled one--the other female is the wag) already looks pregnant, but I'm sort of hoping they eat the fry because I won't have room for many more platys plus the other fish I want to get.

It's always nice to hear people love their LFS! Same here, but I feel I have made the fish lady mad, cause I shared with her I'm buying off the internet.....
I LOVE platys, and have three varieties, It's a challenge to keep them seperate, and I really want to so when I share them with other folks, they will know about what they will have. My favorite at this point are the "rainbow" They are white, red and black....

Hehehe of course...I just gotta get a digital cam first. :P I used to use my cell phone to take pics and email them to the computer, but my parents won't let me do that anymore cause it costs money to email from my phone.

Unfortunately the male is sick with some sort of gill parasites, but I don't think it will be too hard to treat.

Oh that's a shame. I hope he's feeling better now. Why do you think it's gill parasites? Is he flashing?

Yeah he's flashing--I saw him scratching his gills. He was acting a little under the weather, fins drooping and not as active, but I would've figured he was just having a harder time settling in if it wasn't for seeing him flashing. I'm currently disenfecting the q tank but he'll be fine for now.

He's better now after a round of meds.

I saw some g o r g e o u s variatus today at Petsmart. Really cheap too. And healthy (well, as healthy as Petsmart fish get). Amazing. I normally would never dream of buying fish from Petsmart....but I think I may need to make an exception for these guys. I haven't been able to find variatus anywhere. If I do get a trio of them they'll get an extra long quarintine to make sure they aren't carrying any nasty bugs.

The variatus are sunset. I actually just got a trio today. The way the guy at Petsmart caught them, I'm surprised they're all still alive. I was just about ready to snatch the net from him and catch them myself. And he couldn't even tell the difference between a male and a female. Some of the fish in the tank (including my male possibly) had a mild gill parasite infection, so I'm treating them for parasites (normally I wouldn't buy sick fish though). I don't know what's with Platys and gill parasites--the maculatus I got at my normally excellent lfs a week ago had them too. Fortunately they're not that hard to treat, and they're not life threatening to an adult Platy.

Me too.

The variatus are doing pretty well. Both the females were flashing today, but are otherwise acting healthy. I think I will give them a couple salt baths, but I'll wait until they're settled in a bit. They're still pretty nervous in their new surroundings and I think a bath at this point would be way too stressful.

I still can't get over how gorgeous my male is.
