My platy is birthing.........HELP!!!

Man, I hope someone is on here this late!!!!! I just discovered she was pregnant a few days ago. I isolated her since the male fish were swarming her. I thought I had a few more days and I was going to get a breeder net tomorrow but the fry are here!!!!!!! I only see 4 so far. How many should I expect? How long does this take?

Thanks so much!!

Tina the fish novice lol!

Platies can take several hours.. maybe upwards of 5 to 6 hours. They will have more in their sexual prime and less at young and old ages, it depends on size and age, really. Anywhere from 10-40 is common. Once the female is done dropping babies I would pull her, if I were you I'd just net out all the babies and put in a bowl (glass, tupaware, unglazed ceramic, etc) as she had them so she doesn't eat any. She will eat her own babies when hungry. You did awesome by isolating her.

Best of luck Tina.

Sounds like you have things under control.
You may want to float what ever container you place the babies in, in the tank, so that the temperature stays the same.

Well, I thank you very much for your fast reply!! I did fish out the fry and put them in a separate dish....I still only have 4 and it has been 3 hours. I am going to go to bed and will see what happens I guess!

Thank you thank you!! I ended up with only 4...now 3 still living. I started off getting the fishtank for my son since his cat "ran away" but I find I actually enjoy them. I have been reading and learning all I can and can't wait to get a bigger tank!!
