What are some of the "nearest-to-community-level fish" (danios, large tetras, etc.) or something in the "Caution Level" of fish (sharks, small cichlids, etc.) that I can put in a fifty gallon tank with pictus catfish?

pictus are soooooo cool!! I have two in my community tank...they hang out in a fishbowl that I have at the bottom of my 55 gallon..as well as a platic gerbal igloo they dont bother anything but I have heard they will eat anything small that will fit in their mouths..but nothing in my tank is smaller..do you already have yours? goodluck!

No, but I'm planning on getting a pair for my soon to come 50 gallon tank

they are crazy kids...i have a vid of mine sometime if you want to see them...the NEVER stay still..well unless they do at nite when I dont see them LOL

1. what do they eat (or prefer to eat)?
2. How big a tank (will 50 work?)
3. What kinds of tankmates? Will Rainbows work?

1. they will eat ANYTHING but I feed mine algae wafers, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and tetramin flakes...pretty much they eat whatever im feeding the others ...super bottom cleaners..as well as come to the top if they are impatient for things to fall
2. mine are in a 55gallon and yes I think 50 is great...
3. I have a rainbow in mine...the pictus stay on one side and the rainbow has his house on the other..I have no issues with them at all..not that I reccomend it, but if you check my aquaruim info, you can see whats in my 55 gallon with them...and everyone gets along... EDIT: ( which isnt the rule of thumb on those combo's)!
