| | Fish Lore Newbie | What is this? So I was taking a look at my tank, particularly at the algae wafer that I dropped in for my rcs, when I noticed a grey-ish object coming out of it. At first I thought it was merely the back end of one of my snails but then it flicked at my shrimp. On further observation, when I disturbed it, it would go into the substrate. I took it out of the tank and it appears that it can either inch along or swim. Any ideas? |

| | Moderator | welcome to fishlore!!
it probably was already in the subtrate and came up to eat the wafer ...which made it look like it came out of it? id dump the wafers in a bowl to check to be safe but as far as I know, they are aquatic and cant live in dry foods....it is icky tho! LOL |

| | Moderator | Hello. To my knowledge a leech is a leech and will attach itself to anything it can for blood. Not too pretty a picture is it? LOL I think I rank leeches right up there with spiders. Chef get it!!!!!!!!!
Take care,

| | Fish Keeper | The spiders up in here in Ohio will chew your arm right off. I don't even want to think about the arachnophobia you must have going on down south.
You can keep your spiders and gators lol please........You should hear the sounds that come out of me when I see a spider. It’s like a bear was after me. |

| | Fish Lore Newbie | I had no idea that they could live in the substrate... but it might explain why one of my neons had a mysterious death |

| | Fish Keeper | Aw cmon guys leeches aren't as bad as tape worms! They use leeches to heal people in certain countries. Though those pics kind of remind me of the movie slither, now that was a nasty film! Anyways flush him out into your toilet or you can put salt on it first to make sure it's dead then flush it out. |

| | Fish Lore Newbie | Yes, I did get live plants recently, but I'm surprised the thing survived up to now if it came with my plants. Afterall, I waited awhile before putting in fish and unknowingly 'nuked' the tank water.. |
