Hello,
I've set up a 29 gallon tank after many years without one. I've discovered that the pH of my well water is 8.5. I've read that altering the ph consitantly is very difficult and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions of fish that might be ok in a high ph tank. I do plan to add some driftwood that has been soaking for a week or so and am thinking of maybe some peat in the filter as well. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Well, my pH is off the charts too but I have no problem keeping fish in it. Yours is really high though so I would avoid very delicate, low pH fish. Most hardy fish should adapt to it though.

You could use peat in your filter. But you'd have to be using it very systematically and carefully, making sure that it keeps your pH stable. Constant pH swings are worse than a higher or lower but stable pH. I wouldn't advise you to use any commercial pH adjusters. If you really want to use a pH modifier, use a natural one, such as peat. Commercial products are not healthy for fish at all, they're dangerous chemicals.

Another alternative would be to have only hardy tropical fish, or fish species that naturally like hard water. This would eliminate the need to adjust your pH.

Thanks for all the quick replies and suggestions. From what I'm hearing and have read I guess I'd be best off looking for fish that will thrive in what I have to offer rather than trying to change things. Any suggestions on particular species that might do well here are greatly appreciated. Thanks, and it's good to find a forum where those with experience are willing to share.

Cichlids would be perfect for your set -up. There is truly a huge variety to choose from.

Livebearers like higher pH's. Any hardy fish should be able to adapt though--they are probably kept in similar conditions at the store anyway.

You could always check with your LFS and see what the Ph of their water is (don't let them sell you any Ph adjuster) The fish may be acclimated to a high ph already.

Thanks again. Should have mentioned that my water is soft as well. From what I'm hearing and reading, chichlids like hard water. My water is just great for drinking but giving me a pain when it comes to the fish for sure! Hopefully it will come down a bit and stabilize after fully cycling.

You should be able to acclimate fish to your water if you take enough time. Chances are the lfs close to you has water just like yours and if so the fish will need little acclimation.
