| Juvenile Bloody Parrots Good morning . Hope everyone is doing well. I'm sitting here grinning from ear to ear. My new Bloody Parrots (BR's) that I purchased in March of this year for my 26g tank have spawned inside their terra cotta urn. I couldn't believe it. I really didn't think they were any where near old enough to do so. Guessing they are 1 year to 18 months old. I can see the female inside just fanning away while the male is guarding the entrance to the urn. The eggs are all over the walls of the urn. I had to use a flash light to see them. The only other inhabitant is a 1" Albino Cory Cat.
These eggs seem different, larger and a different color than the eggs my large BR's laid a few days ago in the 155g tank (none survived). These eggs have a light brownish tint whereas the eggs my large BR's laid were clear. At first I thought it may be the coloring from the urn coming through but I really don't think it is.
I've heard that scientists have been trying to develop fertile males. hmmmmm keeping my fingers crossed! Below is a picture of the fish I'm referring to. Wish me luck!!!!! |

| That is so cool. I also thought that blood parrots need to be older to breed. Anyway, congratulations. |

| good morning Aquarist..
and congrats on your little one producing eggs. Looking at your photo, I'd say those are some pretty young BRs, and I also cant believe that they would spawn already.. awww they are so cute!
Best of luck with the spawn.. |

| That's really cool. Hopefully the eggs are fertile... it sounds like they might be.
As I've understood it, not all the males are sterile (though most are). I've read about cases where a person gets a fertile male and has successful spawns. |

| Thanks! Will keep you posted. They are being such good parents to the eggs. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high. However, having fry from this species would be pretty awesome. |

| I have one Cory Cat that could possibly eat them if it dared enter into the terra cotta urn. However, the last one that did came back out without a tail and I had to dispose of it and there were no eggs in there at the time. Both parents are guarding the eggs faithfully. I considered moving the Cory but decided against it this time. I want nature to take its course without my interference. If I'm lucky enough to have eggs again from this pair then I may have them in the tank by themselves. |

| Today starts day 3 and the eggs are brown. No sign of any white ones. The parents are guarding the urn entrance and eggs relentlessly. The female comes out to eat and that's it. She is fanning her little rump off The male pretty much stays in a defensive posture right at the entrance of the urn. He goes in for a short visit and then she gently pushes him out.
The entire process is very interesting and so much fun to watch, fry or no fry. We'll see what happens
As I mentioned I'm still going to let Mother Nature take her course. I feel like I need to see what She does in order for me to make better decisions if I'm fortunate enough to have a next time around Last edited by aquarist48; June 14th, 2009 at 06:35 AM.

| Hello Amanda. No....most of the eggs are gone and I believe the ones that are left are not viable. They are still guarding the one's left but I don't have my hopes up. Today is day 5 and I would think something would have developed by now if they were viable. Oh well....Maybe I'll get lucky one of these days and have some fry. At least now I know a little bit more about the entire process for these little guys. Take care! |

| Could be they are just too young. Doesn't mean it can't happen next time! At least you know they know how to do it....and you know they will be wonderful Parents!
Wishing you and your fish all the best! |

| Thanks guys! I have a feeling they are just too young as mentioned. They sure will make good parents though if there ever are any fry. Too, it isn't unusual for first time spawners in other species to devour the first brood. Take care everyone! |
