| Too Cute for words. My new Pets. So I've been researching for about 2 months on these little guys and decided that I would be a good home for them. I came across 5 of them, a colony, that had been rescued and now needed a forever home. Sooo of course I couldn't pass them up. Introducing. George, DD, Henry, Peaches and Cream. They are my sugar gliders.
Here is a video of one of the little twin girls sleeping in my hand!!. |

| Hi C. We had one once. Ended up giving it away. Ours was a male. As the males mature they get very nasty and stinky. They have scent glads that they rub on everything in site. Also very messy. I noticed your pretty white walls behind your cage. I suggest tapeing plastic on those walls. You will end up with pee and poop all over it. Also I'm sure you know that they eat loads of fruit. If not eaten and removed right away you'll end up with a house full of fruit flies. Yes we always thought " Oh I'd love one of those, they are sooooooo cute". After about a year of having this "soooooo cute" thing we couldn't get rid of it fast enough ! Well good luck and keep us in touch. |

| LOL..My males are neutered.. They stop producing "scent" from their glands, that's why my pics of my males you can't see their glands on top of their heads and on their chest. Which also means they don't stink up their cage. They are very messy little critters but I knew that before I got them. I do a ton of research before I adopt any animal so I know what I'm getting into and can ensure I give them a forever home. I clean their cage every day and if they happen to get food or pee on my wall I wipe that off everyday as well with a bleach solution. But they are actually quite clean so far. They are also very social little creatures and really shouldn't be kept alone. They require a very specific diet as well, with the right calcium:Phosphorous ratios using fruit, veggies and a special blend that you make. They are high maintenance but so worth it. I actually haven't found it to hard to keep up on, But like I said I researched for 2 months before I got them and knew what was required but if someone were to just go buy one based on the fact that they were cute and didn't know about the down falls of owning these awesome little suggies then it would be a rude awaking..lol.. |

| Wow, that's negative. lol sorry no offense directed. Sorry to hear that Whisper. My co-worker had one, she had to give him/her away b/c her cats started to eye on her and kept him/her in their bedroom only. They look really cute and cool! I hope you can neuter the males so they won't act like what Whisper stated. She also stated they would glide!!!(obviously...lol) that is so amazing! Well have fun with them and good luck! | My males are already neutered.
Since I have been researching them and taking the time to learn about them I feel like I should say, ( just like I would about someone going out and buying a fish without doing research and not providing it with proper tank mates, diet, space or water requirements) That FAR to many people buy sugar gliders on a whim without doing proper research. This is true for ANY animal. it's a BIG problem for the sugar glider population there are tons of them in rescues because people just do not do research before buying. Really this is a problem for every kind of animal and it just breaks my heart that animals are tossed around. Sugar Gliders are an exotic pet and can have lots of problems if you are not educated about how to care for them. But I def don't want to give them a bad reputation so my honest opinion is this I will eventually probably get fleece to hand on the sides of the cage so I don't have to wipe my walls down everyday from food that they throw..lol.. but other then that I wipe down their cage twice a week and clean the bottom trays everyday, wash their pouches and toys once a week and feed them at night. I play with them in a tent and give them lots of love. Get your males neutered and really they are not that hard to care for if you know what your doing. They are sweet and loving and just like any animal have certain needs. .....Ok..I'm done with my speech.. |

| awww cesch...those are adorable!!!!!!!!!! and im sure your little girls love them....congrats on the rescue and KUDO'S to you on research and awareness....its sad how people get animals of ANY kind because of cuteness/meaness/looks etc and are able to just get rid of them when the newness wares off...EDUCATION is key and when they all end up in rescues and its heartbreaking.....I commend you for adopting these guys and hope you have lots of enjoyment with them... |

Congrats on the rescue! | I actually have 2 males and 3 females. They are one of the few animals who don't effect allergies. They don't shed and don't have dander. But it's good that you didn't get one because you need at least two for them to be happy. Quote:

They are nocturnal and that's when the party starts..lol..They are on the main floor and our bedrooms are upstairs so unless I'm downstairs awake, I can't hear them. Quote:

The girls are bonkers over them!. They get to pet them when I have them in their pouch so they just LOVE LOVE it. They also get to feed them treats, it's so cute to watch them!..
I agree it's completely heartbreaking how animals are bought on a whim and education IS KEY. A couple of hours of research or even minutes can prevent all of it. Not every animal is right for every person. Do your research to see if you can properly care for and live with all the downfalls of owning the animals BEFORE you go out and buy it. My sugar gliders really aren't all that bad to care for, but they are NOT for everyone. But they are for me!!!. I just LOVE LOVE them!!. Quote:
Originally Posted by namehater where do they go to the bathroom, do they have a litter box or do they just 'go' wherever like a gerbil? | Nope, no litter box. Sugar gliders are from Australia and live in the trees, Just like most animals who live in the trees, Birds, Monkeys, they don't care where they go because it just falls to the jungle floor and they don't deal with it..lol.. There is a tray underneath the cage, just like a bird cage. I slide it out every day and clean it with a bleach solution in my tub and I wipe down the cage with non scented baby wipes every day too. Total daily maintenance of cage is probably 10 minutes. Once a week I wash all the toys in bleach solution and wash their pouches and vines. That doesn't take long either. I throw the stuff in the washer 30 min later throw it in the dryer, while that's going on I wash their toys which takes about 10 min. I feed them at night which takes like 5 minutes. Quote:

I have a pop up tent that I put up at night after the girls go to sleep. I take them in there with me with treats and toys an let them run around and play. It really helps them to bond with me and it's a safe environment where I'm not worried about them getting into something. |

| They are so cute, Cesch! Something I personally wouldn't have due to the high maintenance, but please keep posting pics and vids of yours so I can enjoy them through you Congrats on doing your research first as well. You're definitely a responsible pet keeper.
Congratulations on having the males neutered. That was a very smart move for several reasons. Last edited by bolivianbaby; November 11th, 2009 at 10:45 AM.

If that makes any sense..lol..So it just goes to the bottom of the tray..Not sure how whisper had it on her walls. unless the glider was sick and had loose stools. So no poop on the walls here..lol..I don't think I could handle that!. |

I like a different type of high-maintenance. I haven't told my parents, either. And I'm going to hide it from them AS LONG as I can |

| Here are some more pics of my sweet sugar gliders. They are bra babies. Meaning I put one in my bra during the day while they are sleeping, its a great way to bond with them and they just hang out with me during the day and sleep..lol..I'ts too funny. Everyone once in awhile they will wake up and poke their head out to see what's going on..lol. So, now that I've had them awhile I can still say they are a blast to have and still a lot of work..lol..But their cage and the area around it is the cleanest part of my house..lol..I sweep, mop and clean the wall everyday..I can NOT say that about the rest of my house.. So far they are doing great and we love them to death. Last edited by CHoffman; December 2nd, 2009 at 11:43 PM.

| Glad you did your research before buying/adopting. They sound like a blast but to high maintenance for me. I have enough to clean with my birds...lol I feed them cooked bird food and they fling that far and wide!! I have a parrotlet and they are another disposable pet. people see them and say omg a parrot the size of a small sparrow. I have to have it. They do not realize that bird will BITE and BITE HARD!! It is a lot of work gaining the trust and love of one of these little creatures but ohhh so worth it in the end. When you give him a bite of his breakfast as he sits on your arm watching you make it and he says "thank you" it is oh so worth it..lol Mine did that yesterday...he really says thank you in a very high squeaky voice and it is TOO CUTE. So many of these little bundles of attitude are disposed of and never know a good loving home where they are free to trust and enjoy life. I love the sugar gliders....they are sooo cute...and I hope you have many years of fun with them. I love your cage to by the way it would make an awesome parrotlet or budgie cage...hehehe. |

| Thanks!!. I so badly want a bird but hubby is putting his big ole mean foot down..lol. I really wanted a blue and gold macaw but again hubby said NO WAY. I really need to get a job at a zoo or sanctuary or something before I drive my husband crazy. I'm going back to school when my youngest (2 1/2) gets into kindergarten to finish my nursing degree. I quit school and work when I had my oldest now 4 to be a stay at home mommy (which I love doing) but I'm a very social person and I'm def the care taker type, always have been. I have so many passions and loves and I know I can and will do amazing things. But my kiddos come first and that's the way it will stay. I know I'll have my time later. I'll get my nursing degree so I can work here in our town and go to work for a dr office so I'll have weekends and holidays off and can maybe even take summers off for the kids. Then when they are grown I'll have my fun..lol. Until then my husband just has to keep me in check.
The cage is really awesome. It's huge too!!. It's about 6 feet tall and they LOVE it. Bigger is always better!. |
