i just think the little oto will feel more comfortable if there are 2. they get lonely and die on their own sometimes.

That would explain why I didn't have very much luck with my previous otos.

Re: zebra oto

that betta is a betta splendens and looks like a plakat type .. those are more aggressive usually than other betta splendens, even crowntails i think but hopefully would still get along with otos and not scare them. usually bettas and otos are fine together - it's just a thing you have to find out with each betta. the 5g would be just a little overstocked but not a lot, so i'd just keep a close eye on the water chemistry and doing water changes since the otos are very sensitive to water conditions. it will make a fine tank and with steady upkeep and some luck they'll live quite a while and maybe even be buddies. Sometimes Bettas not only accept otos or corys, but they get to be buddies with them and like to hang out together. Best of luck with your tank.

Re: zebra oto

Cool! You found zebra otos? I'd definitely get a couple more. We're looking for them in our fishstores, but no luck so far.

They were in on of the LFS's near me but that was when I wasn't having the best of luck and tried to steer clear of any oto possible.

Oooooh, am so jealous. We'll have to wait for months before we get ours am sure. Silly question: they're not just a pretty face, are they? I mean the zebra otos are as good as the 'regular' otos at cleaning algae?

You're so lucky to be getting Zebra Otos. I've always wanted them but can't find anywhere that sells them.

Cool, thanks for the info.

btw, warning about zebra otos: apparently, they can be very sensitive to protein overdoses, so no bloodworms for them, not even scraps.

Re: zebra oto

slices of cucumber or zucchini, diced peas or beans might be good as well as algae wafers for a zebra oto. you'd have to see what he'd be happy eating.

Romaine lettuce is another good one. Not sure about the beans though--never heard of people feeding fish beans...?? Just make sure you microwave or boil the veggies a bit before serving to make them softer for the fishies.

i should have been more specific.. green beans, usually the canned (no salt) chopped green beans can go over well or fresh organic ones.
