If i were to place cucumber on a rock at the bottom of the tank would the otto's feed on it?

I would also supply algea wafers.

If the cucumber would work...Would microwaving it for softness be a good idea?

Yep that would work, but you'd have a secure it with a veggie clip or something because it'll float.
I pierced it with a wooden skewer and the lid held it in place.

definitely i'd microwave it for just a few seconds to get it a little softer, and then weight it down with something like lucy said
