I have a baby Oto in my tank!

I have a 20 gallon tank with 3 zebra danio's, 2 guppies, 2 platy and 3 oto's. I got the oto's about 3 months ago. No live plants or anything... and I keep the temp always at 80 degrees.

Just today, amazingly, I found a tiny baby oto. He is adorable. So tiny! I do 25% water changes every 2 weeks along with vacuuming. I just did this a few days ago. I am freakin out now about if I have been sucking up eggs or babies. I never thought I would have baby oto's in there. I only see just this one. He seams to be doing really good. He is a very active, fast swimming little guy. Sooooo cute.

All the oto's hang out on this ugly plastic plant for the most part. I always drop their wafers on the plant or they fall at the base of it. I never see them eat the wafers. I also give them 30 minute frozen romain lettuce (they love this especially after its in there over 24 hours) and cucumber which they love.

I can't stop looking in the tank. My husband thinks I am overly obsessing about this. And my 3 year old son is like..."mom can we play now?" Haha! I am so excited.

The pics are not too great but does anyone know about how old he might be?
You can see one of the bigger oto's in some of the pics to compare size. The skinny pic has the baby up towards the top... its kind of hard to see him there.

thats so sweet!!! You must have the perfect pH, Asidic and soft, for ottos to breed. You might want to consider a species tank and breed, as tank bred have less death rates.

I think I know of someone who will want to hear from you. He runs the site at:

http://www.otocinclus.com

He keeps track of all the otos born in captivity and you certainly have proof that your otos have spawned but he will want to see those pictures. He would be able to give you information on how to have the spawn happen again if you want it to and he is going to want to know what the conditions were in your tank like pH and nitrate and other readings if you have them. I have contacted him before and he is very nice to talk to.

This is a very rare occurence and you can be proud that it happened in your tank. It is so rare that I do not know but one other time on this forum since I have been here that otos spawned in a tank and lived. I had some that spawned one time and my betta ate them before I knew what to do and even much about what they were. They were no where near the size of your little guy.

I do know that otos do hide out and you may yet find that there are more of them hiding in the plant so be gentle in the cleaning of it with the syphon. You will need to do more frequent water changes while they are tiny though to keep them healthy. If they have any nitrite spikes in the water it can cause them to be deformed.

I think that is wonderfull. I may also have baby otos in my tank. I just need a magnifing glass to see them. I looked at the under gravel filter and it looks like the entire bottom is moving. I now filter all water changes into a brine shrimp net and dump the net into a 1 gallon tank that has no other fish to harm them. They seem to like it and go nuts when i feed them fish flakes that are ground into a fine powder. The tank also has a ton of algea for them. Good luck with you baby/babies.
