Is this an oto or Cae?
I have 2 otos that are distinctly that. Ever since I got scooter he acts nothing like them or looks like them. He hides all day and doesn't eat anything. I've fed different things like algae wafers, cucumber, and broccoli. He won't eat it, nor will he eat any algae that have been in the tanks. Here are some pics of him, but they aren't very clear. I can't get them any clearer.
He is kind of greenish brown in color, his stripe isn't solid like my otos. It's more zig zaggy down the middle and goes solid closer to the tail. I dont think he's going to live too much longer because he's pretty much starving himself. There is nothing I can do more to help him. He's not showing any visible signs of being sick besides not eating. He swims around fine.Thats about it . Thanks for your help. Natalie

Hi Natalie
Even tho the photos are a bit fuzzy, after looking at them, I agree with you, I dont think that is an oto. Ive had otos myself and I think I would recognize it even with the blurry photo. The behavior is not like an oto either. My otos are/were out during the day and eating diatoms all day long. Your fish sounds like its a CAE.

Thanks kate for your help. I thought the same thing. Fred and Bam-bam are very hyper and have been since day 1.I've had them both for a little over a yr now. Scooter is nothing like them at all.
If anyone else can verify that he is not an oto let me know. Thanks. Natalie

Honestly, I can't really tell from those pictures, other than that it *could* be an oto, sorry. If it helps, my otos look like this:

Natalie look at the bottom of this link at the stripe on the cae and see if it looks like the one on your fish. It also tells how to tell the difference.

As for not eating - when some Otos are caught they are not fed until the get where they are going and then they are unable to eat and digest their food. Cyanide is also used to stun and sedate them to make them easier to catch. these are some of the reasons why we lose so many otos when we buy them. Have you seen this site? It's fascinating to me http://www.otocinclus.com/index.html

Thanks butterfly. I've seen both of those sites and they are both good sites. His strip does look different from my other 2 otos. I'm afraid he's going to die soon. There is nothing more I can do for him. He's bleeding internally now and I'm pretty sure its because he's not not eating and his body is taking a toll from it.I'm not medicating him because I don't know what wrong with him and I see no point really. Im just going to let him die, so he's put out of his misery. You may think its cruel to not try to medicate him, but I don't want to medicate him when I don't know whats wrong with him. I really think he's just dying of starvation.I can't make him eat either, so I'm just going to let him die.Natalie

Natalie-I'm so sorry you lost him. You did the best you could for him, don't beat yourself up or second guess yourself. I agree about not medicating him, you could have caused him real pain and harm by medicating him for the wrong thing.

I've had my other 2 otos fred and bam-bam for over a yr now. They're doing great. In fact Fred is carrying eggs right now and I hope to god her and bam-bam don't decide to fertilize them because as much as I love the little guys I just don't have the time to be taking care of little fry or another tank to put them in so that Miles don't eat them. Nat, so sorry you lost Scooter. I know you did all you could - cause that is the kind of fish keeper you are. It was your influence that moved me to get otos back when I first started with fish.
I am happy to hear that Fred & BamBam are dong well.....Fred is carrying eggs?? See you are doing evrything right!
Sending hugs
