Hi all,

I'm going to set up a 4 foot aquarium in a few weeks. I'd like a well planted tank that's relatively free of algae. To help combat the algae problem I'd like to include as many algae eaters as I need. I'd like otto's but don't know how many. Other algae eaters I'd like are maybe one Bristle nosed catfish (Pleco) maybe one Red Tailed black shark and maybe a Chinese algae eater or Siamese algae eaters.

I only want to get the RT shark and/or CAE, SAA if they can get along with the Otto's in this sized aquarium? Does any one keep any of these fish together successfully?

HI, WELCOME TO FISHLORE!

I feel quite sure if you keep your fish load down, cycle your tank before you add fish, and research your fish BEFORE you buy, you will have a lovely tank.

Algae is only a problem if you overcrowd your tank, get high nitrates, keep your lights on more than 10 hours a day, and over feed. So watch those things, test your water often, and do water changes any time your nitrates get over 10....

As for algae eaters. Remember they add to the bio load also, so sometimes more of them is NOT helpful....the right combination is good though.....Ottoes are great for small spaces like on plant leaves....Bn Plecoes are great! As for the shark or CAE's I wouldn't get them if you want to have a peaceful tank. Both cause turmoil.

It all depends on the other fish you want. I find it is best to find something to live and eat in each part of the tank. The rule of thumb for stocking is 1" of adult fish size per gallon of tank. If you stay well under this it should help keep algae from growing.......Don't count the fish the size you buy them, rather the size they will grow to....A BN has to be counted 4-5" even if you buy it at 2"..... Enough rambling....Have fun, and post often!
