Otos and african cichlids?

I've got an algae problem in my 55 gallon african cichlid tanks. I was just wondering if I could put my otos in there or if they would get gobbled up... (the cichlids range in size from 1-3 inches... they will get 5-6 inches when fully grown).
I could get a pleco, but I've heard that they need lots of space....
I don't really have a ton of experience with plecos or otos (ive had otos since I got my tanks in feb. but I'm still learning about them...)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
thanks!

You could go with one of the dwarf plecos like bristlenose, clown, rubbernose, L52, etc.

I know this isnt the right section for this... but will they do ok with a higher ph? mine is 8.2 (lots of limestone rock for hiding places, but it makes the ph stay higher than the water normally is) Will they be ok to feed off the algae off of the limestone rock?
