Yeah, they say if your Oto can survive for the first month it should stay healthy but some just die before that. They are much more sensitive than some other fish. I know the wild caught ones die easily because of the poison they use to catch them. My Otos are captive bred. That's why I had to wait so long before they finally had some. I've been looking for months. It's difficult to breed them. I hope mine will be healthier because no poison was ever used on them. I know my female died because she was unable to release the eggs fast enough and probably developed a bacterial infection.
I bought a new Oto today. Another male this time to avoid the egg-binding problems females seem to have. He looks very healthy and active and after a few minutes in the tank he finally found Dotcom and has been following him around since then. Dotcom has livened up a lot since he met the new Oto. I don't know if it's because he's happy to have another of his own kind there or competition for food, but at least he's perked up.
LP likes the new guy too and hasn't flared at him or chased him.
