Weird Oscar Behavior

I have 2 tiger oscars, about 2 years old. they have been fighting a lot lately, and i thought maybe they were mating. yesterday, i noticed that they had moved all the glass stones from a corner of their tank, and dug a hole in the gravel substrate. this morning, however, the hole was filled - and a little mounded, and the glass stones were back in place over top. So, I guess I have 2 questions: 1) could they have buried their eggs? 2) did they change their minds and decide not to lay eggs?
Thanks to anyone who might have an answer. We're quite perplexed.

I don't know if they were mating but it sounds like they were tring to determine where one's territory began and the other ended.

Mine do that. It sounds like they were making a pit. I doubt they would cover their eggs. Mine fight a lot also. I've had mine lay eggs once, and they were all gone by the next morning. I'm not sure if I have a male and female or 2 females. I missed the spawning.

i have a common pleco in there also, he's about the same length as the oscars. if i do turn out to have a male and female, could the pleco be seen as a threat and prevent them form laying eggs?

It's very possible. Mine became very aggressive toward me when there were eggs in the tank. I can usually stick my hands in the tank with no problem, but not on that day!
