Sick Oscar / Tank Maintenance

One of my Oscars developed Popeye syndrome, and after having issues keeping the levels in his tank correct with the medicine in it - i moved him to a solo 20-gallon tank. He seems to be doing much better now.

But - the original tank still has one Oscar in it. The nitrite levels are through the roof and I thought with regular water changes and time the Nitrites would drop and the color would go clear.

All the red tint from the medicine and the foam it produced is now gone. It's been about 2 weeks now but the Nitrite levels are ridiculously high.

What I'm doing now:

Day 1) 20% water changes, treating new water with Amquel
Day 2) Dose of "Cycle" with "More Nitrifiers"
Repeat every two day cycle.

The nitrites just won't drop significantly. Any suggestions??

FYI as an update, i bought two live plants and put them in my top tank. Two days later the nitrites dropped significantly. Not sure if it was the plants or just time ...

Try bumping up your water changes to 50% daily. Even with the amquel plus, you might not be changing out enough water to get the level down. How big is the original tank?
