Bad news

we went to do our weekly water change sat morning and found our albino oscar on the carpet. somewhere between 9pm when we checked on them and 8 am he managed to jump out of a space approx 1 1/2 on the back side of the hood. we found scales on the hood. he must had lined up perfectly to get out. his buddy, a tiger oscar is now depressed. he ate a bit sat and sun but not today and has been very listless , laying on the bottom by the intake, and now today he is at the top near the input. he was with the albino since they were both about 2 inches long. will he get over this depression? should we get another oscar or someone to put in with him? our concerns is he is about 7 or 8 inches and might not tolerate another intrusion? we have sveral other tanks, one of which has some aafrican cichlids, one of which is about his size. his only tank mate now is a featherfin cat about 3 inches, that has been there as long as he has. he and the albino always hung out together, occassional fight over food but nothing serious. our concern is he will pine away.
RIP Vinnie

I'm so sorry you lost Vinnie I have no experience with oscars, but I'm sure someone who does will be along shortly.

Please keep us posted on the other's progress. Bless his heart.

Oh, im sry Vinnie passed away, he was a beautiful oscar.
im not too good on oscars, but i might guess a new oscar not his size would quickly be bullied. Someone else on fishlore can probably help you more.
Again, sry for your loss.

oh no! im so sorry for the loss of vinnie that is truely a great loss and he was an amazing looking boy

I am concerned tho and wondering what your water parimeters are and what size tank they are in ? for a 7-8 inch oscar to jump out of a content tank that you have had him in since 2 inches, and for the other one to first be listless at the bottom, now at the top , something is wrong....oscars dont try to jump out unless its for food ...

they are the type of fish that will tolerate others of their own kind but it will take some doing..unless your tank is huge, 150 gals or more, you will have to get them acclimated to eachother and deffinately you need one the same size as him or within 2-3 inches smaller/larger than he is....

again , im sorry for your loss

they are in a 90 gallon. we test for ammonia which is ideal, acc to the strip. we do 25-30% water changes every sat. there is a fluval FX5(rated for tanks up to 400gal). he would sometimes jump for food when my wife fed him, but this was thru the small slit in the back of the hood. it also happened somewhere between 9pm and 830 am

oscars are HUGE waste producers and even with great filtration they require 2 water changes/vacs as their poo is large and sinks to the bottom constantly (I know graphic but needed) ...test strips are famous for unreliable readings...more often than not, they are inaccurate and give the owners a false hope that things are great...if you can, get an API liquid master test kit...they have everything you need, and can do 100's of tests...if you cant afford one, at least get an api liquid ammonia/nitrite test kit...again, something is wrong because they do not jump out unless enticed with food and especially when its dark..they are lazy boyz and actually will lay on their sides on the bottom of the tank, when sleeping ....

LFS checked water parameters and it was fine. he has always slept in the bottom, companions in the tank are fine so it cant be a water issue

what else could it be?

wel tigger is moving around again, not eating as far as we can tell. he is not getting the food when we put it in. his tank mate is fine. a recent thing i the news got me wondering. we had an algea bloom in the nearby river and dead fish were washing up. they said algea blooms either add extra oxygen or take it away, which i found weird it could do both. our tank was cloudy for two days, which i thought was do to the water change. could a small algea bloom been enough to interfer with their oxygen intake? agian no problems with the tank mate. and now that tigger is back, i placed him in the 15 gal overnight he first time trying to escape. he seems to be moving around a bit. and the water parameters are fine, the water is clear, and the filtration is the FX5 and a magnum emperor 400. so filtration issues are not an issue
