Is it better to keep a single oscar or a pair?

I have wanted oscars my entire life and have finally decided to start saving for another tank. I know that 55g is the minimum for 1 oscar and if I want two I would need a larger tank. It is going to be awhile before I have the funding for the tank and all the equipment and decorations, but it is best to be prepared and know just how much I need to save.

My father used to keep oscars when he was a kid and absolutely adored them. Unfortunately one of his oscars decided to commit suicide and jumped out of the tank while he was in work. My dad swore off fish after that and it took me nearly 20 years to convince him to let me put a tank in our house.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. My question is would the oscar be happier as a single fish or with another oscar?

hmm, i think that given an adequate amount of space (i.e. 125+ gallon tank) then two oscars would be very happy together. a 75 IMO isnt enough space for two and they wouldn't be happy together, but for one that would be great!

i've been thinking about getting oscars at some point in the future, and this link has a lot of really great info!

oscars are great alone or in pairs ...75 gals would be good for about 3-4 years if they were the only fish there...then they need bigger...they grow super fast the first 1-3 years then really slow down after that..but all in all, they are happy alone as well as with others
