Oscar+Pleco?

Is a 55 gallon with oscar and common pleco in it ok or pushing the limit?

I would say definitely yes. I'm not an expert on either fish, but I know that plecos get huge and because of they're large bioload, they need a 100 gallon tank. I don't really know much about oscars, but my understanding is that a 55 is the bare minimum for them.

I would not put the two together. They are both big waste producers and both will get very large. The Oscar up to 15 inches and the pleco will get even bigger then that. It depends on the temperament of the individual fish but the people who I bought my 125 gallon tank had a Oscar and they went through quite a few plecos before they found one that survived the Oscar.

I keep 2 Oscars and a Pleco together. I bought all three from the same tank at the LFS, so they were used to each other and were all still young. They get on fine. If you can't do this, then get the Pleco first and make sure he's at least the same size as the Oscar, bigger if possible. As for keeping them in a 55, they'd certanly be ok for a while, but you'd probably want to upgrade to a 75gal or bigger eventually.

I agree with most of your ideas. Yes plecos do get big, but it takes some time until they will need 100 gallons.

I have one pleco for many years in my old old 10 gallon which is now a hospital tank, and one in my 29 gallon, 80 gallon, and 1 in my 1,000 gallon tank. They aren't that big about a few inches but the one in my 1,000 is 12"

I have kept my plecos in the tanks for about 5-6 years now.

So I will not be disrespecting your information about the pleco. But I do know that plecos take some time until they get very big.

I hope you yourself don't go buying a big 100 gallon tank just for one ity bitty pleco xD

Plecos now are somehow more rare... that's what the fishlore person said about the so called "common pleco" but I guess they aren't so "common" anymore..

But yes plecos can be kept with oscars. Little small pleco + ginormous oscars = pleco's death.

You can't keep a small pleco in with a huge oscar unless you have a large amount of hiding space.

I have kept some oscars, but my pleco was vicious so I did a lot of experimenting.. it actually stressed out my Oscar and then the Oscar died!

Anyways, after playing around with some fishes and finding out the information for yourself is actually better than other people's advice or opinion sometimes.

The best place I find good is Big Al's aquariums They have inspired me to do some experimenting on fishes.

if you monitor your water parameters and don't mind doing water changes once or twice a week, maybe more when they get bigger and are feeding them a lot, I would say it would work.
