How big of a tank for an Oscar?

I know its a pretty common question, but i have a derelict 55g tank sitting in my living room, and I'd like to know if it would be big enough to house a healthy and happy oscar. I've heard that 75g is needed, but that seems a little extreme. I think I could pull it of with good filtration, water changes, and just one oscar.

48 gallon minimum with good filtration for an Oscar. So yes, go for it!

55 gallons with good filtration as an absolute minimum. I personally wouldn't go any less than 75g, but 55 is ok.

With an oscar in a 55g, I would want a large canister filter with lots of room for biological media. Oscars produce a lot of waste, and you'll want a large colony of bacteria to process the ammonia/nitrites from that extra waste.

Totally agree.

A standard 55 is 48" long and 13 inches from front to back. An adult Oscar would barely have room to turn around and IMO, that is not humane.
