Oscars and cichlids

My hubby and I would love to someday have a bigger tank with an Oscar or two and some Cichlids. How big of a tank would we need for them. This isn't something we will be getting soon, we will need to save for it and we may be moving in October anyway. I was just wanting to know so we could start saving for what we will need for them. Thanks

An oscar IS a big cichlid and should be in at least 75g tank mates would depend on your oscar's personality. They can go with most other medium to large cichlids.

Hi Darlene. There's good info in oscarfishlover.com (from UK).
I am a newby Tiguer Oscar fishkeeper (5" young he/she). I think you should be careful and add only south/central american cichlids that are NOT aggressive. Your Oscar's personality should be considered when looking for tank mates. Medium size compatible cichlids: Jade blue-eyed, false jade blue-eyed, chocolate cichlid. Big guys: Green Severum, Jack Dempsey. Again, if they have non-aggressive personalities.

I (thought I) brought home three jade blue-eyed cichlids, but upon closer inspection, it looks like the LFS sold me other guys (probably Kenyi, from Africa) and I will need to move them over if my guess is right.

Aim for 75gal (one Oscar) or 120gal (if two). In bigger tanks, a school of clown loaches look great with Oscar fish.

Hope you make it, and when you do, share your pics with us!

I have had sucess in the past with a 75G tank, in here I kept a large Tiger Oscar, a Gold Severum, a Female Convict, and a Firemouth. Kind of a heavy stock...but it worked out very well

Thanks everyone for the info. We won't be starting it up soon, since we may move in October. Hopefully that will give us time to save up for what we need. Now I have an idea of what size a tank we need to save for.

Thanks again everyone. I think we will be getting at least a 75 gallon tank after we get moved. We have been thinking about maybe getting Jacks instead...we still love the Oscars though...
