Being my indecisive self. Now I am looking at oscars. Are they a good idea for a 55G. I know they are really aggressive and a MAX of 2 could be kept in a 55G. Let me know what yall have to say.

A standard 55 is 48" long and only 13" wide.

Since Oscars can grow to be 14" inches, a 55 is not really big enough for even one.

If you read the books....Yes, a 55 is plenty for Oscars. However, I feel quite certain that, were I to ask my Oscar whether he enjoyed his 55...he'd tell me that he liked it when I bought the 75.

If I had it to do over again...I would have never put him in the 55. When he was just about 6in long, it started to show me how cramped up he was in that tank. That's when I went and bought a bigger one.

A 55 Breeder might work, since it would be deeper instead of tall. I have a standard 55, and that's just not wide enough, IMO.

Yes, oscars are happy with 55 gallon tank. But, take note of the fish it's going to be with. Oscars can be aggressive sometimes!

If you are thinking of oscar keeping you should look at our Moderator, Gunnie. She has a great oscar setup. I think it is a 75g tank with 2 oscars and 1 common pleco. (I believe that is all she has in the tank.) I would not keep oscars in a 55g past their first year. They can be aggressive if not given enough space, and there are few fish I would feel comfortable keeping in the tank with an oscar, because anything small enough to fit in its mouth probably will find its way there.

Something to consider with Oscars is if they have enough room to swim without basically bashing their brains in from hitting the glass.
