Oscars in a 55g tank (what I assume you have) will need a larger tank by the time they reach adulthood, a 75g at minimum which is 4ft by 2ft by 18inches. If you plan to keep them in the 55g for long, I suggest you invest in objects that break up the line-of-sight in the tank. That gives the smaller/beaten up one ability to get away from larger more aggressive one. Objects such as driftwood, or large rocks, they will probably decimate any plant you put in there (with the exception of few plants), and will move smaller rocks around, and will probably spit smaller rocks against glass. That can get costly, as well as dangerous.

I agree with the chief. I have 2 in a 100 gal. tank, and dominance and territory seem to be very important to oscars. Mine fight quite a bit, and the grumpiness will increase as they age. I have no plants in my tank, and the ornaments in the tank get moved around, including the gravel. I have pea gravel in mine, and they insist on having half of the tank bare bottom. You should also have heaters in your tank that are not glass, or are protected. Oscars will attack them too, and you don't want to fry your fish. I've had one broken in my tank. Now I use stainless steel or titanium heaters in that tank.
