Re: Oscars and Deco

When i had mine I would use a large-sized pebbly substrate with big, cool looking rocks and pieces of driftwood. Just be warned. I could spend half a day cleaning and arranging tank, and after I put him back in, he'd move everything around the way he liked it. FYI... I've seen an oscar move a rock as big as it was.

Re: Oscars and Deco

Jacks will go in with the oscars since they seem to be the best choice and look cool

I too have fake plants and my Oscar only pulls up one type. He doesn't mess with the grassy plants. I picked up some all plastic hobby fake grass that works well. Just make sure it's all plastic, no metal or dye. It's hard to find big enough plants lol. The ones he does dig up end up floating for a long time. I can't reach the bottom of my 150 when it is full and my "claw" broke. Yes I call it the claw and yes I say "RRRRRAAARR It's The CLAW" every time it goes in the tank.

Re: Oscars and Deco

I have some water lilies in with my O. He likes to pull them up and then sit in the shade of them. The plants are very tall, so they shade the tank pretty well. He tends to leave the fake ones alone.

I just put some 4in PVC pipe in there too, just a couple of pieces. We'll see if the fish use them. If not...out they go.

Oh, I forgot about that... I found a couple of these plastic breeder grass clump sort of things I tried to put into the tank. My oscar immediately ripped them up, but them they floated to the top and he shot right under it, so I kept them in there floating around. Upside down they looked kinda cool, and he loved them. I woud have forgotten until you mentioned the water lillies. I would DEFINITLY recommend some sort of shade thing if you can find something. The seem to really like the cover, sort of like a bass sitting under a big lilly pad.

Yeah, he rips up any plant I put in the tank these days...we go through spirts with these things. LOL He's still getting used to more room. I moved him, last weekend, from a 55 to a 75. So...things are different and he has to prove his dominence over his domain. LOL

I'll be adding a bit more substrate this weekend, and replanting the plants again. He can have his victorious week, but I'll win...ultimately. LMAO
