Bichir eating habbit

Talking about bichirs got me wondering... I got some rose reds for him and figured that he would be good for a week if I put in four... same thing I did with my turtle and it worked out great... only the bichir chased down and ate all four.. is this common? Will he eat himself to death I found it very odd... I mean he is large compared to the rose reds but 4 in about 5 min that seems to be an extreme.... any clues??

Since fish in the wild don't eat every day when food is available they will frequently stuff themselves. I really feel this is an inborn trait that never leaves them even when they are many generations down the line aquarium bred. I don't know of any fish that stops eating unless the food runs out. a fishes stomach is approx the size of one eye so it will be up to you to limit food available. Remember the more they eat the more waste they produce

thanks

Thanks for the information... yea i figured that and decided that he will only be allowed one fish every other day... I heard that there diet should also consist of worms... I have blood worms but the article was referring to earthworms... is this a normal treat for fish like this? Sorry for all the questions never had anything outside of the ordinary every day fish....

If he will eat them earthworms are fine. Be sure they come from an area without fertilizers and they need to be washed before feeding. Or you could buy some at the bait shop
