freshwater stingrays

Hey guys,

Yesterday I was looking through a fish supplies catalog and I noticed that they sold live fish. Nothing new there, I saw that they were selling motoro stingrays, they were claiming that they only get up to 4" but another website (if I remebered it i'd give it) claims 18" but I was at the TN aquarium (BTW definately worth going if ur in the area) and these stingrays that look identical if not exact to the pictures I was seeing were upwards of 24" in diameter. Anyone know anything about these guys?

thanks,

Inari

thank you much. Outside of the misspellings...i gather they can be quite .... difficult to care for. Though I had antipated a tank around 90+ US gallons. 100 was kind of expected. Anyway thanks for the info.

I live like 1 1/2 hours from the Chatanooga aquarium (if that's the one your talking about) and it is really nice. Especially the new exhibit with the freshwater stingrays.

Anyways, why don't you ask the aquarium people? They may know since they keep them.

They sell these at my LFS as "Teacup Stingrays".
I guess they don't stay small for long, huh?

Someone locally is trying to offload a 220 gallon aquarium that has one of those stingrays in it. :P

He even says it's going to need a bigger aquarium.

It is quite rare to find a good LFS that has the space and dedication to take care of such an unusual pet.

I have to agree there, I love stingrays but like someone else said, they are really different to care for!

The chatt aquarium rocks to say the least!
Our lfs we shop at has a huge display tank with FW stingrays and discus. They must be the smaller guys, its the tank where they aren't for sale and they have had them for a long time with them about the size of your palm. However, the ones they sale are smaller.

I would say 100+ tank and get the smaller species.
Its a cool addtion to an amazon tank.

It would be awesome to have something like the chatt aquarium has w/ the big ones lol.

Motoro Stingrays are freshwater stingrays, and meaning that they DO live in the Amazon and they were believed to be salt water creatures until the Andes Mountains rose up trapping salt water creatures and over "evolutionary time" they were able to adapt into freshwater over hundreds and hundreds of millions of years.

Anyways if kept in a large tank, and well fed and the tank water is always nice they can grow up to 1 meters and 3" long.

I hope that helped.

Thanks again for all the info lol, but I have more than enough info on these little buggers. As cute as they are and as much as i'd like one (or 10 LMAO) I doubt i'd ever have the room to keep for my personal enjoyment. Also (since i've come back to this thread hehe) Another great aquarium that is well worth the drive is Shedd's Aquarium in Chicago now that is another one well worth the visit, the penguins have to be my favorites lol
