I just got a Peacock eel today. I know what to feed it, but how do I feed him without the other fish taking his food?
Also I have fry in my tank that are half an inch big would they be at risk to a eel thats about 6 or 7 inches hopefully they don't dissappear.

For success with almost all Spiny eels remember a few guidelines:

A-all the young eels need to be fed a worm based food at night or when the lights are dim. < they go crazy for earthworms, bloodworms, blackworms > Hint: get a bunch of live blackworms and release them all at once. They will dig into the substrate to be dug out by the eel later. That way the eel will for sure feed.

B-they will almost for sure DIE if you dont use a soft silicate sand for the bottom of your tank. They love to dig and feed on the bottom. They are very vulnerable to scratching their delicate skin on gravel which quickly leads to death by a fungal or bacterial infection.

C-they will almost for sure DIE if you do not seal the tank lid and double check make sure it has no holes. All Spiny eels are amazing escape artists. At night they will search and prod and poke for any way of escaping they can. They then die of dehydration on the floor. Or worse, they get struck half way out and suffocate.

D-they will eat any SMALL fish or fry or snail or shrimp that sleeps on the tank floor at night. Neon Tetras are a favorite.

E-they love floating plants like Hornwort, Watersprite. They will even somewhat 'dig' through them, which is kewl to watch.

F-most eel combos are ok if you watch them and have a large tank, but both the Fire and Tiretrack Spiny eels must be kept separated from other eels at all times.

I have a peacock eel. At first, I was nervous about him getting scratched by the colored average-sized gravel in the tank. But he never tries to hide in the gravel since he has plenty of dark caves to shelter him. He doesn't hide all day either. He's usually swimming around for most of the day, but maybe that's because he's afraid that he'll miss a feeding if he's hidden. (I give him freeze dried bloodworms at morning and at night.) Also, he's never shown interest in eating smaller fish. I had some neon tetras in his tank, and he left them alone.

***I'm not saying the guidelines listed above are wrong. I think some of them are more for the larger eels though. Or maybe my peacock eel is an exception.***

i also have a peacock ell. one of my favorite fish. They may eat shimp pellets after dark. Mine started hiding more and more. he would only come out in the evening until i started feeding him blackworms. now he is out all the time. when i feed the rest of the fish he smells the food and get real active. i feed him with a turkey bastor.
