Nope, that is one of the natural colors goldfish come in.
Just not as commonly seen as the red/orange ones.

Generally, if they are kept with not enough light, the orange will fade to a paler, yellow/gold color. There are some that are naturally that color, but most of the ones at Walmart, etc, will turn a deeper orange as they get sufficient light.

Well not to be disrespectful or anything, but that is why they call them goldfishes

GOLD fish. Usually there are some types of fishes that do have gold colors, just like the gold angelfish, and gold gourami

Not to be disrespectul or anything, but most "goldfish" come in orange colorations and the actual "gold" coloration is rare, that is the reason why he asked.

If I remember correctly from my reading - The yellow (true gold) color was considered the royal color and it was illegal for non royalty to have that color. That is why the reds and oranges are more popular, there were more of them. Hang on and I'll see if I can find that somewhere...

Ah, I thought I saw it here....wikipedia is good stuff...

In 1162, the Empress of the Song Dynasty ordered the construction of a pond to collect the red and gold variety of those carp. By this time, people outside the imperial family were forbidden to keep goldfish of the gold (yellow) variety, yellow being the imperial color. This is probably the reason why there are more orange goldfish than yellow goldfish, even though the latter are genetically easier to breed.

Here is the link if anyone wants to read more...
