Fire eel questions

I was at my favorite lfs and the girl who runs it showed me a fire eel. He was so cool that I couldn't pass him up. Right now he is in a 29gal tan with, 4 Black Kuli's, 6 Dalmation Molleys,2 ciclids and a hillstream loach. He is 4" long right now. I just bought a 75 gal tank and will start cycling this week and plan on putting him in it after cycle is over. My ? is what would be good tank mates for him? was thiking ciclids but don't know which ones would be good. I'm thinking Kribs and ?

Large fish.
Fire eels will grow up to the point that much larger tankmates (I would think the larger cichlids) are necessary unless you want to lose them as the eel's supper.

Larger africans (not too aggressive) might be good with him due to the high pH preference

Yea I agree that he needs large tankmates, they will prey on smaller fish. If I knew I could get a peacock eel and my cichlids not eat it up, I would have one! I had one a while back and thanks to the impluse buy and the fish store saying he would be ok in a 10g tank, I lost him. Now knowing a lot more about fish I would love to have another, they get super friendly, and will eat out of your hands.

They are, my peacock eel would come up to the glass to my hand, and was very tame. Even my husband got very fond of him. Just feeding them slowly w/ a bite of food in your hand, and working w/ them they will be very tame.

ya he is cool and won't quet take the food from my hand yet but he gets close. So how many of say 4" to 6" ciclids could I put in a 75gal tank? and are Krib's going to get large enuff for him not to eat? Axe the lobester idea might set up a 29gal for shrimp and crawfish though but not right now. So what are some peaceful ciclids?

I think that the Kribs will stay to small. I would look at some haps for a 75 gallon tank. Check out www.cichlidforum.com for some species profiles. Allie knows a lot more about haps than I do, so hopefully she can jump in and give you some advice

With as big as your eel is going to get, I would go with haps over mbuna because I think that a 4-6 inch fish might still be to small to share with your eel. I would look for fish around 8 inches.
