How many neons/ottos could I put in?

I currently have my betta in a 10 gallon tank, I'd like to add an otto, I'd like just one but I know they do better in pairs, so if anyone can tell me how an otto does on his own that would be great!
I'd also like to add some neon tetras to add some color, but I'm wondering how nippy will they get and how many should I put in the tank to make sure they have a big enough group?
I'm ok with going a bit over the inch/gallon rule, since I have plenty of java moss and fern as well as a couple other plants and I aslo do regular water changes to ensure bettas water is very clean!

Re: How many neons/ottos could I put in?

3 otos (they do best in groups of 3+) in that tank would ensure enough space for all your fishes. I would not add the neons, they will probably either get killed or nip the bettas fins.

I read about somebody that had fish that was constantly nipping their betta's fins, they said that AS SOON AS THE FINS ARE ALL GONE, he thought they would stop nipping because there wouldn't be anything left

Bettas usually like to live alone, but in some cases bettas and fish can be mixed. The reason otos are good for betta tanks is because they are generally not seen. If you do decide to add neons (which I wouldn't suggest), make sure you have another tank for them to go in if a problem erupts. Good luck, Brianna

I had my betta male living perfectly happy with the neons for months. One day he decided atacking and I had to move him .... And, yes, he can catch the neons ... mostly bang them.

Make sure if you put otos in a 10g to have food to suppliment their diets. They will make short-work of the algae, more than likely, and need algae wafers/veggie pellets/slices of vegetables or whatever you decide to suppliment their diets with.

We have luck keeping bettas in community tanks with some things, but we keep a close eye on them. We've never had neon tetras in with our bettas, and atleast one person saying they've had bad things happen when they did that should serve as a point, but I agree with bbfeckawitts, if you decide to do so make sure to be ready with a plan B just incase.

Best of luck in all your fishkeeping endeavors.

the otto should be fine if you have a planted tank like you say. i would add 3-4 neons so you dont overload the tank and still have a nice scool
