Hi Cheese burger.
Danios seems to do well in at least 6, and I've heard the same for neons. I would think they'd be fine together; I have found danios to generally be more argumentative amongst themselves, rather than other fish.

The rule of thumb for schooling fish is "the more the merrier". I went through a period of getting the minimum amount so they're "happy", but one or two will die and your back to the same problem. Now I have a tank with rummy nose, I started with 6, then each month bought another 6. I did that for about 5 months. I had a few problems (mostly sick from the store and transporting/acclimating) I ended up with about 24 and it's great to watch them "school" around the tank! It almost looks like one big fish.

Question for you: Will your Cichlids eat small fish? you may think twice.

I agree with the point about 6 being the minimum and the more the merrier (though, I still think danios are jerks lol).

Also, I completely missed the part about cichlids - anything that will fit in a cichlid mouth becomes cichlid food (as far as I've read anyway).

Actually, I like Danios, I have Gold Longfin Danios and they are very entertaining. They chase each other around all day long! I know this is a sore subject to most of our FL friends, but I used them to cycle all my tanks. They are one of the most hardiest fish. I have never lost one and I've had them for about two years with no signs of stress or ammonia/nitrite poisoning. (Although I stay on top of water changes during this period).

As for neons, They are on the opposite side of the spectrum: very sensitive!
I would not put them in a tank unless it's well established. But if you do choose neons (any variety), they look fantastic as a school! Go on youtube and you can see how beautiful they look in large schools (especially with a lot of plants).

Hi Ga-rr-ett,

I have many zebras (started with 4).... due to spawning... non stop i would say. They do not disturb other fishes as long as i have at least 3, but with 6 they are chasing each other and not other fishes.... how did the zebra kills the platys and guppy? could you elaborate? I have platys and neons with my zebra for well since i have a tank.
Thanks
Anthony

I have 5 danios with 5 neons (amongst others). Recently moved the danios (again for cycling reasons, sorry! But all doing great and loving new tank) but they always got on very well with them, and the cardinals I had before they died.
I have 3 zebras, 1 leopard and 1 long finned, and they look great, so active and always hanging about together like a group of naughty kids. This actually describes them perfectly...

They also left my cories alone as well. Maybe cause the cories chased them if there was food to be had on the floor for them! Also, they never even touched my guppies, and one guppy had babies, so can't have been feeling too bad with them around..

Good luck with them, you will love watching them!!
